SIX CLIMBING LESSONS WORTH LEARNING

LESSON 1

The world has lots of mountaintops, so before they begin to ascend, climbers have to select their summit: - they study - they evaluate - they reflect. Choosing the right summit, at the right time, is the bedrock decision of a successful climb.

What summit has God set before you?

"With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of His calling, and that by His power He may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith.” 2 Thessalonians 1:11 (NIV)

LESSON 2

While some choose to climb alone, significant summits are almost always assaulted with others. Having the right person(s) on the other end of the rope can sometimes save your life.

To whom will you tether your rope?

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work…
a cord of three strands in not quickly broken” Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NIV)

LESSON 3

Regardless of the team you choose, proper preparation is essential. Asking the right questions - and answering them correctly - will increase the odds of a successful climb tremendously.

Will you allow the thrill of the climb to rush you to the starting line?

“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” Proverbs 16:3 (NIV)

LESSON 4

Experience is invaluable on a climb. Lessons learned from practiced climbers can keep you from having to learn the hard way. Novice climbers can get in trouble fast.

Will you put experience to work for you?

“The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out.” Proverbs 18:15 (NIV)

LESSON 5

Big Climbs are usually broken into bite size stages. Trying to reach the summit in one leap is almost always recipe for disaster.

Have you established the appropriate stages
for your summit climb?

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost
to see if he has enough money to complete it?” Luke 14:28 (NIV)

LESSON 6

Unexpected surprises do happen - even with the most experienced climbers - so it is imperative to pack the right emergency gear.

"Climbing can kill you."
Gary Neptune, 1983 Successful ascent of Mt. Everest

Are you prepared for the worst, as well as the best?

“Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you
when Jesus Christ is revealed.” 1 Peter 1:13 (NIV)
